Genomic Portraits

These portraits of particular Alpine ibex research subjects, foreground successful reintroduction efforts. Conspicuous ear tags, attached by researchers, represent ongoing scientific efforts in the field. Subjects for the “Genomic Portrait” series arose from a series of conversations with researchers, who related stories of memorable Alpine ibex. Though these diptychs depict the external beauty of the animal, they simultaneously provide an internal view, through circular visualizations of DNA. Genomic data teaches us the legacy of overhunting and near extinction: diminished genetic diversity.
